Before buying a new orchid you need to determine the growing conditions you have to offer. Temperature, light, and humidity are very important to orchids. You may also need to consider the amount of space needed and how much air circulation is available.

    Temperature

Wither you are planning to grow orchids inside or outside you will need to determine what the temperature range is from the coldest nighttime to the hottest daytime. If you are going to grow outside you can find several online websites that give what the temperatures range in your area. You can also buy your own min max thermometer and gather the data yourself.

Many garden enthusiasts have their own mini weather stations.
For growing indoors you should already know the temperatures you set your thermometer at, however if the plant will be at a height level that is different from the thermometer you will need to determine the temperature.

An example would be how much warmer it would be on the second story of your home when it is 78 degrees at the thermometer on the first floor.

Orchids have a variety of temperature preferences depending on the genus of the plant. The orchid temperature preferences are determined by the coolest nighttime temperature. Cool growing is from 45F to 55F, intermediate growing is from 55F to 60F, and warm growing is from 65F and warmer. Phalaenopsis orchid types are popular as an indoor plant because they fall into the warm growing temperature range.

    Light

How much light your orchid needs is just as important as temperature. Some orchids need several hours a day of direct light. Others need only shady or less intensity light for longer hours. You can also grow orchids under artificial lights. Most medium and low light orchids can be illuminated by using florescent lamps. Orchids can be divided by the amount of light they need into three groups, bright light, medium light, and low light.

Orchids needing bright light require a very bright south facing window if grown inside or a bright greenhouse. You can use artificial lights with high output florescent lights which are special order and more expensive than normal fluorescents.

For medium light needs you can use an east facing window if grown inside or a shaded greenhouse. For artificial light you can use a normal four tube florescent light fixture.

Low light orchids can be grown in an east facing window or artificially with a two tube florescent light fixture. This is another reason Phalaenopsis orchids are popular they are low light and can be grown under normal indoor florescent lighting.

Basic garden furniture consists of a table, a set of chairs and perhaps an umbrella. You can spend time relaxing, hold family get-togethers and even spend intimate moments at your garden furniture. To enjoy all this to the maximum, you have to use these tips to preserve your garden furniture.

    1. The manufacturer usually gives cleaning and maintenance recommendations for the furniture. Follow this, and perhaps wax and touch up bare spots and cracks to get rid of the moisture of raw wood furniture.

    2. Always wipe off spills immediately to prevent furniture absorbing it.

    3. When not in use, use furniture cover to cover the furniture. The covers are usually made from woven polyester and are durable enough to provide protection during winter and rain.

    4. Just remember to leave sufficient room for circulation when you cover your furniture to prevent the formation of mould.

    5. Make it a point to clean your furniture using mild soap and water at least once a week, using a soft cloth or paper towel. Then, wash the furniture using a pan of clear water and let it dry.

    6. If your furniture is not in a covered area, make sure you wipe it dry after it rains. This is especially important for wooden furniture as it should never remain in water.

    7. Coating your furniture with a good coat of automotive wax protects it from UV rays.

    8. It’s better to avoid directly placing your furniture on damp soil for long periods of time.

    9. If your garden furniture is made from wicker, give it a good brushing with a medium bristle brush. It removes the build up of dirt and makes your furniture looking better.

    10. If your furniture is made from cedar, then it’s better to use a wood sealer to prevent the raising of its grains and to give a beautiful colour to cedar.

    11. In case of teak furniture, you have to brush oil evenly along its grain, without any overlaps. However if there is any rain, frost or dew on the furniture, wait till it dries before you oil it.

It is important that you oil your furniture periodically to avoid the furniture turning silver-grey. In case it does turn silver grey, you can restore its colour by giving it a light sanding and using a cloth to apply oil.

Growing grapes will take a lot of time and does need patience. Don’t even start planting grapes if you are looking for immediate rich harvests. Grapes require good sunlight, enough water and rich soil in order to develop properly. Grapes generally start bearing fruit after 2-3 years of planting. You can obtain those “labor fruits” only if you are properly taking care of your grape wine. Always choose a proper soil in order to grow grapes.

Always think about the characteristics that your chosen grapes variety has. All grape varieties are unique and will impact tasks needed from you. The grape variety that you are growing will have a direct impact on the length of the growing season. You will have to look for a grape species that has a proven track record of growing properly in the area where you live in. Study climatic and soil conditions in your locality so that you can choose the one species that offers best results.

Choose the proper soil. Soil offers nourishment and support for your crops. Even if you are using a very good fertilizer the soil can still ruin all chances of rich harvests. The soil would let you know what nutrients would reach your plant, how much water it absorbs, the drainage around the roots, the minerals that go to your plant etc. In the event that your soil will not take in enough water and can not properly drain it you can be faced with roots saturation. Before planting rootstocks and seeds you need to check the toxicity of the soil.

Before you plant the rootstocks, be sure the rootstock is in good health and has not dried up. In case you are unable to plant them immediately, keep the rootstocks submerged in water for a day not more as it could rotten the roots. The rootstocks should never be left to dry. Incase you are stuck in a quandary of how to retain your rootstocks if you can’t plant them the best option would be to make a temporary trench and place the rootstocks by covering them in soil.
